Elena Cardellini

Elena CARDELLINI was born in Ancona, Italy and studied Applied Arts at the G.Cantalamessa State Institute. In February 2006 she earned a First Class General Degree in Decorative Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata, after studying for a period at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art of Nancy (France). In 2008 she earned a Postgraduate Degree in Visual Arts, Theatre and Fashion Design, from the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice.
She has already received recognition and prizes for her work, showing at local, national and international events. Since 2003 she has collaborated with associations, artists, galleries and museums both for art events and exhibitions. She now lives and works in London.

Is our body our own private territory? Or, whether we like it or not, are we merely an atom of a wider collective body in which our individual identity is sometimes lost? The body is the physical connection between our self and the reality which surrounds us, a bridge all the more concrete for being composed of muscles, fat, water, flesh and bone. Using various techniques but always focusing on the human stomach, Elena Cardellini draws attention to the substance of the human body: for the artist, the human stomach is a material reality which allows us to rediscover and reclaim this physicality which we have lost consciousness of.

Body, form, gender: the nude, its essence caught by Elena Cardellini, rediscovers its own value in the bodily sphere, a value obscured by the iconographic abuse of a consumerist media. The rhythmic composition of the forms, brought out by the acid colours, enlivens the conceptual contrast which animates each canvas: the analysis of the relationship between male and female.
